Core Characteristics of a Modern Society
When you look around your city or town today, you are seeing the results of centuries of change. The main features include:
- Interdependence: Unlike the self-sufficient meaning of the past, we rely on thousands of people—from farmers to truck drivers—to get what we need.
- Urbanization: Most people live in large cities where they work in offices, factories, or shops.
- Use of Technology: We use computers, the internet, and machinery to do work faster and more efficiently.
- A Money-Based Economy: We no longer use the bartering meaning of swapping goats. We use coins, notes, and digital banking.
The Shift from Traditional to Modern Trade
