Why Do We Need Money? Exploring the Shift from Bartering to Currency

In Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) Grade 7, we study the history of trade to understand our economy today. For a long time, people lived in a world without money. But as communities grew and began to trade with strangers, they realized they needed a better system than just swapping goats for grain.

Why Do We Need Money? Exploring the Shift from Bartering to Currency

The main reason traditional societies did not need money was because they were small and self-sufficient. By understanding the self-sufficient meaning, we know they produced almost everything they needed themselves. When they did trade, they used the bartering meaning of direct exchange.

The Problems with Bartering

While there were advantages of bartering, like building trust, the system had major flaws. These disadvantages of bartering are the exact reasons why we need money today:

  • The Need for a “Double Coincidence of Wants”: You had to find someone who had what you wanted AND wanted what you had. If you had a cow but needed a shirt, and the shirt-maker didn’t want a cow, you couldn’t trade!
  • Difficulty in Carrying Value: It is hard to carry 50 chickens to the next town to buy a bed. Money is light and easy to transport.
  • Items Rot or Die: If you trade in tomatoes, they will rot. Money stays the same value for a long time.

The Invention of Currency and the Promissory Note

To solve these problems, humans began using “commodity money” like cowrie shells or gold. Eventually, people started leaving their gold with goldsmiths for safety. The goldsmith gave them a “promise to pay” on paper. This was the first promissory note, which eventually became the paper cash we use today.

Money in Our Modern Society

Today, our modern society is much more complex than the traditional society examples we see in history. We have thousands of different economic activities, and we need a common currency to keep track of it all.

However, we can still learn from the past. For instance, 2 ways African traditional religion contributes to a harmonious society is by reminding us that even with money, we should still value community and sharing. To see a full list of how our money-based world differs from the old way, check out the differences between modern and traditional societies or revisit the core characteristics of traditional societies.
